This intensive 4-day classroom course combines the following Units:
RIIBLA 403 Design Blast
RIIBLA 402 Monitor and Control the Effects of Blasting on the Environment

Course Delivery
Classroom Only – 4 days theory and assignment submissions:
- Public program – Brisbane
- Private program – min 10 attendees
- Trainer – Peter Duniam (37 years in the Drill and Blast Industry)
Duration
- 80 hours (nominal) excluding Underpinning Knowledge course.
- Refer to the Underpinning Knowledge Course below – 13 hours (nominal)
- Course is open for completion for 12 months from classroom date.
Reference Material will be provided in your course.
Blast Management Operations Manual is available to purchase on completion of the classroom course. $200 plus GST
Underpinning Knowledge Requirements
Successful attendees are required to demonstrate a level of underpinning knowledge in relation to drill and blast operations.
This may be demonstrated in one of the following ways:
- Upload an existing Statement of Attainment awarded within the last five years for the following units of competency
 – RIIBLA205 Store, Handle and Transport Explosives
 – RIIBLA301 Conduct Surface Shotfiring Operations
 – RIIBLA305 Conduct Secondary Blasting Operations
- Complete a self-paced course covering the essential elements of Drill and Blast. This course covers 16 topics and is expected to take around 13 hours.
- Complete the theory component of a Surface Shotfirer course. Note there is an additional cost for this.
- Undertake RPL for the above units of competency. Note there is an additional cost for RPL.
Foundational Skills
- Calculates measurements, products and ratios
- Conveys information and requirements clearly and listens carefully
- Identifies and interprets information from workplace documentation and legislation
- Completes workplace and legislative documentation using sector-specific vocabulary, grammatical structures and conventions.
Equipment Requirements:
- Access to a modern drill and blast design application:
 – A 2 week license to BLASTPLAN II is provided with the course.
 – You may also use DataBlast, Vulcan, Surpace and Minescape etc incorporating drill pattern design, charge and hook up design.
- Computer with a camera and an internet connection.
- Mobile phone (IOS or Android) running the SiteDocs APP.

If you require an Unrestricted Shotfiring License you’ll need to obtain this Unit of Competency. This is also recommended for Blast Design Engineers operating at sites with environmental constraints.
